BUDAPEST (Reuters), Oct 22 – The preparations for a meeting between U.S. president Donald Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin in Budapest are still ongoing, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced on Wednesday, a week after the summit had been put on hold.

The meeting has been paused. Opens new tab. Moscow’s refusal to accept an immediate ceasefire with Ukraine cast a shadow over negotiations.
” (Hungarian foreign minister Peter) Szijjarto has arrived in Washington. The preparations for the peace summit continue. The date is still unknown. Orban wrote in a Facebook post that “we will hold it when the time comes”.
Trump announced last Thursday that he and Putin will meet soon in Hungary in order to try to end the war in Ukraine.
Trump said that he did not want to waste this meeting, but that there could be further developments in the coming two days.
Orban has been a Trump ally for many years. He trails in most polls before the 2026 parliamentary election.
After years of conflict with the EU over what they consider to be a democratic backsliding by Budapest, he also maintained warm relationships with Moscow.
