Haseena is living at an unknown place in India. She fled the country soon after her government was ousted in August 2024
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajib Wajed has expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government for “saving his mother’s life” following a student revolt against Hasina’s government.
talking to ANIWazeed claimed that terrorists were “planning to kill” the Awami League leader. He said, “India has always been a good friend. In the crisis, India has essentially saved my mother’s life. If she had not left Bangladesh, the militants had planned to kill her. So, I am forever grateful to Prime Minister Modi’s government for saving my mother’s life.”
Earlier this week, Hasina was sentenced to death by the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh on charges of incitement, ordering the killings and failing to prevent atrocities.
Haseena is living at an unknown place in India. She fled the country soon after her government was toppled in August 2024. Talking about his extradition to Bangladesh, Wajed said, “For extradition, judicial process has to be followed. In Bangladesh, there is a government which is unelected, unconstitutional and illegal. To convict my mother, they amended the laws to complete her trial faster.”
He further said, “My mother was not allowed to appoint a lawyer to defend herself. Her lawyers were not even allowed to come to the courts. Before the hearing, 17 judges in the court were dismissed, new judges were appointed, some of whom had no experience at all on the bench and were politically connected.”
What has India said?
Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, and the Foreign Ministry have urged India to extradite Hasina after her conviction, citing the extradition agreement with India.
A statement from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said, “India is committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in that country.”
“We will always remain constructively engaged with all stakeholders,” the statement said.
