The National Investigation Agency has arrested a Kashmir resident accused of helping suicide bomber Dr Umar Nabi carry out the Red Fort car blast that killed at least 10 people in Delhi on November 10.
In a major development, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested Amir Rashid Ali, an aide of suicide bomber Dr Omar Nabi, for helping carry out the Red Fort car bomb attack on November 10, which killed at least 10 people and injured several others.
The blast occurred at 6:52 pm near the Red Fort metro station, when a Hyundai i20 packed with explosives exploded, damaging several vehicles and leaving the area strewn with debris and mutilated bodies.
Aamir, a resident of Sambura in Pampore, Jammu and Kashmir, was detained in Delhi after an intensive search led by the NIA. The blasted vehicle was registered in his name. Investigators say he went to the capital to help arrange the purchase of a car that was later converted into a vehicle-borne IED.
Forensic tests confirmed that the burnt body found inside the car was that of Dr Umar Un Nabi, an assistant professor of general medicine at Al-Falah University, Faridabad, and a resident of Pulwama. The NIA has also seized another vehicle owned by him for investigation.
Aamir’s house in Sambura was searched and his brother is currently in the custody of Jammu and Kashmir Police. So far, investigators have questioned 73 witnesses, including several people injured in the blast.
The NIA said it is working with Delhi Police, Jammu and Kashmir Police, Haryana Police, Uttar Pradesh Police and other central agencies to uncover the larger conspiracy behind the bomb blasts and identify more suspects.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police has tightened security across Central Delhi, stepping up checking, verification operations and armed deployment at sensitive points. During a special night operation on Saturday, police seized 34 abandoned vehicles and issued 417 challans under the Delhi Police Act, a senior officer said.
In its latest statement, the NIA said Aamir had “actively conspired” with Umar to carry out the deadly attack, calling his arrest an important step in the ongoing investigation.
