Donald Trump has again criticized his political rivals by claiming that tariffs have helped him prevent global conflicts and strengthen the US economy.
In a sharply worded message on Saturday, US President Donald Trump insisted that tariffs were at the center of his foreign policy, declaring he had used them as a threat in five of the eight wars he managed to prevent. He said that the United States was taking “trillions of dollars” from countries around the world through tariffs, which he suggested had strengthened the American economy.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump said he stopped five of eight wars “directly because of the threat of tariffs” and credited tariff-driven revenues for the influx of “investment dollars from foreign lands.”
Rivals criticize Trump for linking tariffs to economic strength
Trump’s latest statement follows his repeated claims earlier this year that the tariffs helped prevent a military confrontation between India and Pakistan, although India has not confirmed any such involvement. Taking aim at his predecessor Joe Biden, Trump argued that there is now “no inflation” and described inflation under Biden as the “worst in USA history”.
He said the stock market had hit an “all-time high” for the 48th time in 9 months, using the moment to criticize Leonard Leo, the Koch Network and others, whom he had accused of “cheating” the United States through tariffs in the past.
Trump further said that the United States is currently “the richest, strongest and most respected”, attributing this to “November 5”, the date of the 2024 US presidential election, and the tariffs he has supported.
