Brazil erupted in fresh political turmoil on Saturday when former President Jair Bolsonaro was detained in Brasilia, just two months after he was convicted of attempting to stage a coup following his 2022 election defeat.
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was detained on Saturday and taken to police headquarters in Brasília, two months after the Supreme Court convicted him of attempting a coup following his defeat in the 2022 election.
Bolsonaro was sentenced in September to 27 years and three months in prison for the failed coup attempt. However, his spokesman Fabio Wajngarten said Saturday’s detention was not related to enforcing that sentence, but was a precautionary measure.
Bolsonaro, who had been under house arrest since August, was transferred into custody over the weekend, his lawyer confirmed.
“He has been jailed, but I don’t know why,” his lawyer Celso Vilardi told AFP.
The 70-year-old man’s legal team has argued that he should be allowed to serve his sentence at home, claiming that incarceration in a regular facility would endanger his health.
This is a developing story.
